A [phallic] Dangerous [phallic] Method

Today’s journey to the cinema not only made me realise that I haven’t got much money at the moment, but I had a nice reunion with people I haven’t seen in a while: My fellow extras from A Dangerous Method

To answer you first question (I just presume you have any questions) : YES, your host (that is: me) can be seen on screen. That’s propably not for use for anyone who doesn’t know me or doesn’t know what I look like, I guess it’s even hard for those who do to spot me.

To the movie itself: It’s the seemingly true story about the fathers of psychoanalysis: Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Gustav Jung (Michael Fassbender), and Jung’s patient Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), whom he has an affair with.  The actors are all doing a great job, and I especially like Mortensens Freud, always smoking (phallic symbols alert!) and having kinda irony. Knightley’s performance was praised to heavens prior to the release, and it holds up to the expectations (spoiler alert: she is the main star in the film). The cinematography is very solid and provides beautyful pictures: shot, countershot, and different angles. That’s what you get for almost 2 hours of watching people talk!

Though, I have two problems with this movie: First: There is no chemistry whatsoever between Spielrein and Jung. You never believe their feelings for each other. It’s just two good actors acting to be in love with each other.

Secondly, noone in this film ever laughs! So you can imagine, when the credits begin to roll (and no, I’m not credited) , you’re feeling quite depressed. and somehow everywhere you go, there are phallic symbols…

And boy, the movie is cramped. There is so much story going on, and I have no idea what the main plot is. Is it the relationship between Jung, his wife and Spielrein? The friendship between Jung and Freud? The beginning of the psychoanalysis? Or is it about the growing antisemitism, and/ or the anticipation of WWI?

There is little besides Mortensens Freud and the other actors that makes the movie special, therefore it’s no masterpiece, maybe Cronenbergs weakest movie so far. But it’s still quite good and I would recommend it.

In which scenes have you been an extra? If I’d known, I would’ve looked for you when I watched it…
It must’ve been great to be an extra in a movie set in this period!

In Belvedere-park, when Freud and Jung are walking along the path and stop by the statue of the sphinx. I’m in the whole scene to be seen (actually I even appear in the trailer waaaaayyyy behind Freud ) When the two stop at the statue, just keep watching the left corner 😉
I’m also in the cafe Sperl, though I couldn’t spot me there
