Rubber is an insider tipp. The “slasher-movie” about a tire that comes to life and kills people by telekinetic powers is both ridiculous and brilliant. It’s not just a trash movie, it’s more, much more.
Rubber takes movie- narration to a meta-level, when the audience are an important part in the story. They – we – get involved when the narrator/ sherrif tells them/ us what they/ we are to expect. Even he knows that the story is ridiculous, and should never be concluded, that’s why he takes extreme measures: He literally kills the audience. Well, most of them (for we still watch the movie… and there is this dude in the wheel chair who just refuses to die)
And what does this all have to do with a killing tire?
Why is it even killing people?
Erm…look, a bird
The birth of Robert the rubber tire is very spectacular, and reminds very much of this scene:
The special effects are great, and the actors play their ridiculous roles very honestly.
So, if you ask me, what rubber is, I can tell you: Rubber is an arthouse movie.
