Scott Pilgrim vs The World

I was able to buy a dvd of the problably most underrated movie of the year 2010. I´ve seen the German version in the cinema – which was brilliant, and yesterday I could lay my hands on the OV- which was even more brilliant!

This Movie – by British cult-director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the dead) – is the adaptation of the underground Graphic Novel series “Scott Pilgrim vs the World”. A Movie fpr the 90s generation.

Young Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is unemployed and plays bass in the underground band “The Sex-Bo-bombs”. He falls in love with the haircolour-changing Ramona Flowers, but in order to be with her, he first must defeat her 7 (!) Evil (!!) Exes (!!!)!

Well, simple story, but told by a brilliant fantasy-genius. Scott Pilgrim has a lot of fantasy, well what else is to expect by a Videogame-nerd? So, the battles look like out of a Computergame (especially beat´em ups like Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur). There are always Legend of Zelda III sounds, so Scott is like Link on a journey to free his beloved princess Ramona (Mary Elisabeth Winstead) from the evil Gan(n)on…ehm…Gideon (Jason Schwartzman), founder of the League of Evil Exes. These Xs include Chris Evans (FF I&II, Sunshine, Captain America) and Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Zak and Miri make a porn). Latter one is especially funny, for he plays som kind of super-man. Fine choice of cast, Mr Wright.

The special effects are amazing, so is the editing. Some cuts are simply astonishing. The cast does a great job, and Michael Cera, who seems to bplay the same role over and over again, is such a sympathetic protagonist.

There are many videogame-/ and comic- related jokes in the movie, and even the final boss from Zelda II has a cameo.

I can´t say more than when the Universal logo appears for the first time with its fanfare in 8bit tune, you´ll know what you will get.

10/10
